Mexican Officials Link Tourist Site Shooter to Columbine-Inspired Motives
The attack took place on Monday at the Pyramid of the Moon within the Teotihuacan archaeological zone in the state of Mexico. Officials said the suspect, identified as 27-year-old Julio Cesar Jasso Ramirez, opened fire on visitors before being confronted by National Guard personnel, after which he took his own life.
Investigators reported that the attacker was carrying multiple items, including knives, ammunition, and material related to the Columbine massacre, in which two students killed 12 people before dying by suicide.
Authorities also said the suspect used a handgun manufactured in 1968, along with .38-caliber bullets and a bladed weapon during the attack.
During a press briefing, state prosecutor Jose Luis Cervantes Martinez said early findings suggest the attacker was influenced by previous mass violence incidents and appeared to be attempting to imitate them.
“Preliminary findings indicate a psychopathic profile characterized by a tendency to replicate events that occurred in other places, at other times, and carried out by other individuals; this tendency is known as a ‘copycat’,” he explained.
Officials said the case remains under investigation as they examine the suspect’s background, motivations, and possible exposure to extremist or violent material prior to the attack.
