Mexico’s Leader Calls for No Repeat of Covert US Operations in Country

(MENAFN) Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum on Monday insisted that any covert US security operations on Mexican soil must not happen again, arguing that a recent case involving US personnel should be treated as an isolated exception.

Tensions between Mexico and the United States have escalated since April 19, when it was revealed that US agents had been conducting security-related activities inside Mexican territory without official authorization. According to reports, the operation violated Mexican law and was viewed by officials in Mexico as an infringement on national sovereignty.

The two US nationals involved later died in a vehicle accident alongside security personnel from the Mexican state of Chihuahua. Authorities confirmed that both individuals were linked to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and had not possessed the legal documentation or approval required to carry out security duties in the country.

Speaking at a press conference, Sheinbaum emphasized the need to maintain cooperation while drawing clear boundaries:
“We hope this matter is clarified and that we continue collaborating and coordinating. We have no desire to enter into a conflict with the United States, but we must be very clear, make all of this public, and state that this is an exceptional case and not the rule.”

According to reports, the incident has not only strained diplomatic relations between Mexico and the US but has also sparked political debate domestically. Opposition figures have accused the ruling Morena party of failing to take a strong enough stance against drug cartels and of exerting pressure on Chihuahua Governor Maru Campos, who belongs to the National Action Party (PAN).
