Caribbean Fall Travel Comes With Big Benefits

While hurricanes do not blast the entire Caribbean all autumn, they do form in the Atlantic with some regularity, averaging 14 named storms per year, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. This includes seven hurricanes, three of which reach major hurricane status (Category 3 to 5).

But even with this number of storms in the Atlantic, the likelihood of a direct hit on a given Caribbean island each year is small.

There are still chances that a hurricane could affect your vacation, so it’s best to be prepared. “Hurricane season doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t travel to the Caribbean, but it does mean you should plan more thoughtfully,” says Christina Tunnah, head of the Americas for World Nomads Travel Insurance.

Tunnah adds that preparing for Caribbean trips during hurricane season should include booking flights and accommodations with flexible modification policies, allowing extra buffer times for flight transfers and cruise ship departures, and bringing extra phone batteries and chargers, as well as duplicates of your travel documents.

It’s best to buy your insurance early in your travel process. According to Allianz Travel Insurance, “When a hurricane (or other severe weather) becomes a named storm, it also becomes a ‘foreseeable event’ with known potential to affect your travel. If you buy travel insurance after a storm is named, your plan won’t provide coverage for storm-related claims.”

For extra security (and a higher premium), travelers can purchase a Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) policy that allows for refunds even if people cancel because they’re just worried about the weather, with or without a hurricane designation.

Typically, “CFAR allows you to cancel your trip up to 48 hours before your scheduled departure for any reason, and usually reimburses 50 percent to 75 percent of your prepaid, nonrefundable trip costs,” according to InsureMyTrip, a travel insurance comparison site.
